- Military AviationThe last surviving Battle of Britain pilot, John "Paddy" Hemingway, has died at the age of 105. Mr Hemingway, who was originally from Dublin, joined the Royal Air Force (RAF) as a teenager before World War Two. At 21, he was a fighter pilot in the Battle of Britain, a three-month period when air force personnel defended the skies against a large-scale assault by the German air force, the Luftwaffe. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer paid tribute to Mr Hemingway, saying his courage and those of all RAF pilots had "helped end WWII and secure our freedom". - War StoriesThe hugely popular Te Papa exhibit Gallipoli: The Scale of Our War will stay open until 2032, after opening a decade ago. "It's been unimaginably popular," Te Papa chief executive Courtney Johnston said. "I think the most popular exhibition ever done in New Zealand... has introduced audiences to a new kind of immersive storytelling. "It's so popular and there's a reason for that. People just love it." The exhibit opened in 2015, 100 years after New Zealand soldiers landed at Gallipoli as part of the ANZAC forces in World War I. - Modern Military TrendsBundeswehr has a high dropout rate and the number of conscientious objectors is rising. Germany’s armed forces commissioner, Eva Högl, this week warned the country was not closer to its goal of having 203,000 active troops by 2031, as the overall size of the armed forces slightly declined last year, partly because of a high number of dropouts. A quarter of the 18,810 men and women who signed up in 2023 left the armed forces within six months.
