The Sea Was Kind (1960) By Albert Klestadt

These bare figures conceal an amazing story of how Albert Klestadt, in an open native boat with a crew of a war-like and treacherous race, sailed from the Philippines to Australia using a page from a Dutch atlas as a chart. This book, of which this voyage is the climax, was written from a diary and log kept by the author between 1941 and 1942. A first draft was written in 1944 but censorship did not release it until later.

A true story of Albert Klestadt who had to flee 1930’s Germany at the age of 19. After landing up in England he went to Japan and worked and then fled to the Philippines as Japan entered the war. The book is the story of his escape from the Philippines as the Japanese invaded. He sailed a small sailboat 3000 miles to Australia. Amazing story.
