The History Of Chivalry and Armor (1988) By Dr. F. Kottenkamp

The knightly virtues that comprised chivalric honour included not only the art of war, but also the generosity, gallantry, justice, and religious demeanour required by the feudal system which enforced these codes of behavior among the European aristocracy of the Middle Ages. "The History of chivalry and Armour" tells us about the knights, their arms, ornaments, and entertainments. Reproduced from hand-coloured engravings in the original nineteenth-century edition, the lavishly detailed plates accompanying the text show us the positions and perils of the joust, the banners of the tournament, the intricate designs wrought on heavy horse-armour, the swords, daggers, and all the instruments of siege and attack. Fittingly though, this splendid book closes with text and illustrations on the tournament rather than the musket, For it was indeed a grand spectacle--the pageantry and arms of the aristocracy at play.
