The Heroes: Operation Jaywick (2017) DVD

At dawn on 26th September 1943, a series of explosions in Singapore harbour sink or damage seven Japanese merchant ships. At the same time, six British and Australian commandos paddle their canoes frantically back to an island base across Singapore Strait before daylight reveals them.

This raid was Operation Jaywick, an audacious plan to penetrate Singapore's harbour defences and damage Japanese shipping and prestige in South East Asia . The plan was devised by Englishman Major Ivan Lyon the previous year, when he came across a former Japanese fishing boat, the Fukoku Maru during evacuation of Singapore. Lyon realised the fishing boat could be used to enter Japanese waters where a raiding party would paddle canoes into the harbour and mine Japanese merchant ships.

Lyon sells his plan to a sceptical high command with the assistance of Colonel Mott, the commander the Allied Z special unit. Lyon assembles a team. Lieutenant Donald Davidson, a piratical English adventurer will be raid commander. Lieutenant Ted Carse , an experience mariner will command the fishing boat, now renamed Krait after the deadly Asian snake.

After a tense passage past Japanese coastal defences in the Lombok Strait, M. V. Krait drops the raiding party off at an uninhabited island . Embarking in collapsible canoes, jammed full with explosive limpet mines, the team paddle fifty miles to a forward base, from where at night they paddle into Singapore Harbour and attach the mines to merchant ships.
