The Department's main function is to support Australia's Navy, Army and Air Force in defence production, research and development, purchas­ing, transport and storage. The Department is
also the Commonwealth Disposals Authority. Finally, the Department is responsible for the Australian Antarctic programme.
 
Production of aircraft, guided missiles, small arms, ammunition, ex­plosives, marine engines, clothing, etc. is carried out in the Department's factories and in industry.
 
This report looks at the operations conducted by the department in 1973.
