Biography of RAF Chief Marshall Sir Trafford Leigh-Mallory.

 

He commanded one of the two main fighter groups during the Battle of Britain and, with his subordinate Douglas Bader, was involved with the still-running controversy about the use of the "Big Wing" tactic, one that was fiercely opposed by the commander of the Eleven Group, Keith Park.

 

On D-Day he commanded the greatest air armada in history; he did not survive the war, being killed en route to the Far East to command the combined American and British air forces against the Japanese
